SCRAPING OF PROPOSED FILM VILLAGE

Reports—according to the BBC—say that President Muhamnadu Buhari has stalled his plan to establish a mega film village in Kano state. The move comes as a result of
social media outburst as well as negation by Islamic clerics. Over N3bn had been earmarked for the proposed film village which was intended to promote the Hausa language film industry also known as Kannywood.

Now, my own wahala in all of this is simple. Muslim clerics were quick to put off the idea of a massive project capable of employing thousands of people on the grounds of moral erosion. So, how do they intend to provide for the number of potential jobs lost by the cancellation of this project? We wait to see.

The government too. I mean president Buhari. Did he really think about a substitution plan before acting Mr Piety: rushing to scrap a project whose good perhaps outweighs its ills? I keep my fingers crossed on this one still.

It may interest you to know that the Nigerian film industry—alias Nollywood—is the second largest employer in Nigeria and her cinema is the third largest in the world, judging by networth and revenue.
